Next meeting Wednesday 24th November at the Pear Tree pub, Barons Court at 19:00

Don’t forget this month’s pub meeting is this Wednesday at The Pear Tree pub in Barons Court, and hopefully we’ll be hearing how a couple of newly licensed members are getting on.

I’ll be happy to give a demonstration of our Google Groups if anyone’s struggling or confused (easily done).

And be careful not to drink too much because we need a media person to deal with magazines like Radcom, Radio User and maybe the likes of Facetwit and even this website, and you wouldn’t want to be wake up on Thursday and find you’d been talked into that, would you?

The Christmas Social has been confirmed for Tuesday 7th December so please confirm your attendance so I can give the pub numbers by next week. It’s a very informal affair – turn up, eat, drink, socialise.

Meeting report Friday 12th November (AGM)

The fourth AGM of the Hammersmith Amateur Radio Society and the second to be held online AGM was well attended and much ground was covered. Godfrey, the Secretary, will be circulating minutes shortly. The Secretary, Treasurer and Training manager were re-elected unopposed but no candidates came forward for the post of Chairman to replace Selim who retires four years after founding the society. There will be a General Meeting of members early in the new year (January of February) to ratify changes to the Constitution to reflect the new style of operation and possibly to elect a Chairman or Acting Chairman.

The next meeting will be in The Pear Tree, Barons Court on Wednesday 24th November from 19:00. Because of the way the dates in December work it was decided that a pub meeting wouldn’t be possible as it would fall just three days before Christmas but subject to confirmation we’re going to have a social event on or close to Tuesday 7th December upstairs at The Albion on Hammersmith Road, just round the corner from the old church hall and almost opposite Olympia. Check back here and in your mailbox for details.

Don’t Forget! AGM This Friday, 12th November at 20:00 online

You should have received an email from the Secretary a couple of weeks ago giving formal notice of the AGM and the Agenda and Accounts should reach you by Thursday but if not then give Godfrey a call or an email.

An important point we’ll be discussing is redistribution of excess funds accumulated during Covid and marginally less important, the possibility of a Christmas social at somewhere like The Albion.

Next meeting and AGM Friday 12th November at 20:00 online

As advised by email from the Secretary recently the next regular online meeting will also be the AGM. We’ll try to keep the formal part of the meeting to a minimum (30-40 minutes) and all regulars are welcome, but to vote on a resolution or for the election of officers you’ll need to be a paid-up member on the night.

We’ll also discuss meeting dates over the Christmas period, partly because the calendar doesn’t work out well over that period but specifically whether we’d like to have a social event such as a meal and The Albion, the pub round the corner from the church hall where we used to meet have offered a reserved area upstairs on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Meeting report Wednesday 20th October

A bit quieter than last time as a few people were put off by the rain but we had an in-depth discussion about David2’s aerial possibilities and the best bands to try to work on, and we taught him the microwave test for suitable aerial materials. John K told us more about the old rigs he’d unearthed in his garage.

The AGM which will take place in next months online meeting was discussed but no further candidates for the committee posts came forward.

There was general interest in having a Christmas meal or social even but it was noted that meetings for the end of the year may present a problem since the current schedule would put the December pub meet three days before Christmas when pubs will be packed and many will have conflicting events. We could therefore do it in place of the November pub meet or simply bring it forward resulting in three meetings in a short time and then a long gap to the first meeting in January. But there’s nothing to stop us having the Christmas event around the end of November/early December and perhaps an extra online meeting over the Christmas period. Should we throw it open to guests? Have a think and we’ll discuss at the next online meeting.

[Footnote] I’ve since checked with The Albion, the pub round the corner from the old church where we met, and they’d be delighted to reserve the end of the upstairs bar, and they do decent giant-sized pizzas along with a range of other meals and snacks.

Meeting report Friday 8th October

There was an impromptu demonstration of FT-8 culminating with Gregor making QSOs with several others via remote operation of his station in Poland.

John K. showed us some of the spoils from his garage clearout including some Yaesu rigs from the 1980s in immaculate condition.

Blazej reminded us that James Ryan has invited us to clear him out of thirty years of radio magazines so Blazej and David will try to visit to get an idea of the scale.

Members were reminded that the next online meeting on 12th November will be the AGM and nominations for committee posts are invited.

Don’t forget the next pub meeting at The Pear Tree on Wednesday week, 20th October, and the next month or more of events is on the calendar at Upcoming Events – m0xhs

Next meeting Friday 8th October at 20:00 online

We’ll meet online but this week we’ll use Jitsi which has proved to be fine for both Gozo Amateur Radio Society and London Hackspace Radio Club. As usual a link will be posted nearer the time.

If you have any ideas for topics that either you’d be prepared to talk about for as little as ten minutes or you think someone else has done and you’d like to hear them speak about.

The current arrangement of one online and one physical meeting each month on the second Friday and second following Wednesday seems to be working well but we should re-affirm that we’re happy with that for the foreseeable future. The November meeting will be the AGM where decisions like this can be ratified.

‘A Pictorial Introduction to Data Modes’ – Chesham and District Amateur Radio Society presentation on Wednesday 29th September.

The Chesham and District Amateur Radio Society is hosting a presentation on the subject of ‘A Pictorial Introduction to Data Modes’ by Mike Richards G4WNC on Wednesday 29th September 2021 at 20:00.

As a member of the Radio Society of Harrow, Godfrey received an invitation and contacted Malcolm Appleby the secretary of Chesham who confirmed that HARS members would be welcome.

It’s suggested that we join the Zoom meeting using our names, call signs and an indication that we’re with Hammersmith ARS so the host knows who we are before admitting us to the meeting.

Meeting report Wednesday 22nd September

We had a record turnout and commandeered the middle section of the pub which was perfect. Topics of conversation ranged from electric vehicles to 1970s wallpaper, with a passing mention of radio along the way.

The subject of antennas inevitably comes up and Dave (new) mentioned the danger of the wind when leaving things out on high terraces and JJ confirmed this from his own experiences in Gozo.

Godfrey has been invited to an interesting Zoom talk at another club and is going to enquire whether the invitation could be extended to all club members.

JJ announced that he’s going to sell his FT-817, FT-857D and FT-1000mkV field to fund the purchase of an FT-DX10 and will post full details in the Google Group https://groups.google.com/g/hars-friends
